Tree of Life Grand Oak Manor

Located a top the Kumaon hills in the lesser-known state of Uttarakhand, Tree of Life Grand Oak Manor, is set in the breathtaking Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, 25 kilometres from Almora.

Sitting at the height of around 7900ft, the thickly wooded forest offers unhindered views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including Trishul and Nanda Devi. Whereas Binsar Wildlife sanctuary is a haven to over 250 species of birds and animals including leopards, pine martins, flying squirrels and barking deer.

The history of the property dates back to 1856 when the then British Commissioner of Kumaon, General Sir Henry Ramsay, acquired this land and built his rather grand private home here. In 1931, the property was purchased by Rai Bahadur Harkishan Lal Sah Gangola and has remained in the family since.

This colonial residence has ensured that it has retained its charm with many well persevered period features throughout.  The 11 hideaway rooms are spacious and airy, replete with teak wood furniture, bright cosy textiles throughout, and cozy fireside armchairs – are all reminiscent of a more genteel time.  All located on the ground floor, each room is complete with a cosy sit out, offering the perfect location for your morning tea.

Dining at Grand Oak Manor, is very much a home cooked affair with a wide variety of continental and local dishes on offer served throughout the day in the restaurant.  Menus change daily and there is always something of interest from the local Pahaari cuisine to excite the palate, such as Aaloo Tamatar Ka Jhol, a delicious tangy preparation of steamed potatoes and curried tomatoes.

There is plenty to do in this woodland hideaway from gentle day treks from the property to the impressive Zero Point, the highest altitude of Binsar towering at 7800 ft.  There are also several charming village walks and temples tours to explore whatever your interest or fitness level.
